Having spent over two decades fast forwarding the future while looking at the world through its own inimitable super-telescope, The Orb's next album project returns to Earth and also goes back in time as Alex Paterson teams up with graphic artist/video maker Mike Coles to release C Batter C, a powerfully evocative audio-visual celebration of family, vanishing London and times gone by.

Released on November 11 [11,11,11], the unique package is the physical manifestation of Battersea Bunches, the film shown at Brixton's Red Gate Gallery last December along with an exhibition of related visuals by Colesy. The soundtrack is a 17-minute, specially-written piece by Alex and esteemed Berlin-based electronic pioneer Thomas Fehlmann, an Orb satellite member for over 20 years, now accompanied by a string of remixes which home in on the track's constantly morphing moods and take them further out in total sympathy.

While the world gets increasingly more snarled up in instant hit gratification and soul-sucking technology, thankfully there are still corresponding currents in art and music which cast back to simpler, more innocent times; recalling childhood glimmers, mysterious half-memories and indelible images. On another level, these can be haunting and irreplaceable, especially when of a vanished location or dear friend or relative no longer here. Using the derelict but still imposing shell of Battersea Power station as centre-piece, the 17-minute film is based on Super 8 footage shot by Alex's Aunt Lil of a 1956 family day out led by his father. The three kids - his brother Martin and cousins Sue and Jen - are obviously having a great time feeding the ducks in Battersea Park [overseen by the still-billowing power station] and pigeons in Trafalgar Square, along with a journey along the River Thames from Battersea to Greenwich, taking in other London landmarks such as Tower Bridge, St Paul's Cathedral and Big Ben, the same spots effectively cut between then and now. The film is, in turn trippy, fascinating, emotions-stoking and sometimes incredibly poignant, lingering long after it's finished, bound to inspire similar warm memories for the viewer. It's without doubt the most personal project that Alex has embarked upon, Colesy surpassing himself on the editing.

Alex and Thomas' hauntingly atmospheric soundtrack is a remarkable counterpart to the film, veering from spectral mood-enhancing to beautifully melodic, the marching band sequence a particularly nagging half-memory. The CD features the original soundtrack along with an electronica-spanning bevy of remixes by Gaudi, H.F.B., David Harrow, Nocturnal Sunshine, Autolump, Being and Fehlmann/Orb, ranging from ghostly dubstep to contagious techno-boogie. These are producers which the Orb loves and trusts implicitly; not one fails to to turn up trumps.

The DVD boasts the original film plus three video mixes and both discs come in a gorgeous 60-page hardback book [the cover based on Alex's father's pilot's log-book] featuring Colesy's film-related images, plus poetry and musings by Alex and his Aunt Lil.

Such love, care and intricacy is a rare thing in the modern world. The Orb and Malicious Damage are about to unleash a new kind of time capsule classic. Even by referencing the past, the future can still be prodded.

The Orb & Youth Compile Three Disc WAU Mr Modo Compilation

Looks like The Orb's co-founder, Alex Paterson has been quite busy lately. A while back, the classic mixtape he made alongside Thomas Fehlmann for Coldcut's radio show back in 1991 was reintroduced to the world, and more recently, Paterson joined forces with Martin Glover (a.k.a. Youth) and Pink Floyd's David Gilmour on the forthcoming Metallic Spheres album. Now, Paterson and Glover will revisit the days of late-'80s acid-house with a lengthy compilation telling the story of their WAU! Mr. Modo label. Entitled The Orb & Youth Present: Impossible Oddities, the release features classics and rarities from the likes of Insync, Mystic Knights, Indica Allstars, Readymade, Eternity, Uncle 22, and, of course, The Orb. The mix album will packaged along with artwork by The KLF's Jimmy Cauty, a poster made up of music press cuttings from the '80s and '90s, and a bonus third disc featuring a DJ mix of WAU! As was reported here back in October 2009, the rumours concerning The Orb collaborating with David Gilmour appear to be taking

David himself made the following mention of the project on his own website here...

"David & Orb Rumours True – Up To A Point - Recent comments by ambient exponents The Orb's Alex Paterson that they have been collaborating with David Gilmour are true – up to a point. David has done some recording with The Orb and producer Youth, inspired initially by the plight of Gary McKinnon (see our related stories). However, nothing is finalised, and nothing has been confirmed with regards to any structure for the recordings or firm details re: any release plans"

Founded by 'Dr' Alex Paterson and Jimmy Cauty in 1988, the Orb became pioneers of ambient techno, forging their own chillout sound after Cauty left to concentrate on his other band, the KLF. Best known for their massive hits Little Fluffy Clouds and Perpetual Dawn, the band have continued to push the boundaries of electronic music over the last twenty years.

Following on from their acclaimed 6 Mix last year, Dr Alex Patterson plays some of his favourite dance records of all time, as well as playing and talking about the musical inspirations behind his new album Baghdad Batteries. Unreleased track in memory of Andy Hughes

As a tribute to Andy Hughes, an unreleased track from his days/involvement with the em:t record label has been dug out by Orb Mailing List Member (and superb musician in his own right) Gel-Sol. These were his comments about the track on the mailing list:

"Ok, I found the track! And yeah, it kinda reminds me of the Orb's remix of Gong's "A PHP's Advice. I don't have much info on this track, let alone a name. For all I know, this track was unreleased, and was intended for a future em:t records compilation (em:t folded shortly after this, most likely for picking up shit bands like Gel-Sol and 302 Acid.

I was visiting the UK in the summer of '05 when Matt Hall of em:t records played this for me. I believe he said the track was unfinished, but I had to have it! Either way, this mix sounds quite good. ENJOY!

So thanks to Andy R for digging out this marvellous little and I think you'll agree that its a fitting tribute to Andy Hughes. In fact, if you download this track, perhaps you could see fit to add whatever contribution you feel you could afford to the ongoing collection in his memory here? No matter how big or small, the guys'n'gals that looked after Andy during his final days do a wonderful job and your donation will go a long way to ensure that others who are suffering enjoy the same high standard of care Andy did...

Andy Hughes... sweet dreams and thanks for the music...

As many of you have no doubt already read or heard elsewhere, former Orb band member and contributor Andy Hughes has passed away on Friday 12th June at the ridiculously young age of 44...

As many long-term fans of the Orb will testify & appreciate, their most productive and inspirational period between 1989-1999 was in no small way due to the input of Andy along with the good Dr.LX, Kris "Thrash" Weston and the rest of the crew members of HMS Orb. He contributed in no small way to what was the classic Orb sound and was especially involved with their 1997 album Orblivion, the successful single Toxygene, as well as the global tour which followed culminating in a sell out concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1998. After the Orb, he started producing his own music as well as being sought out my other artists to add his own unique touches to their work.

Andy leaves a wife and a two children and my thoughts are with them and his immediate family at this painful time...

Andy’s funeral will take place at West Norwood Crematorium, Norwood Road SE 27on Monday 29th June ’09 at 11.45am. The service will be open to anyone wishing to attend. It is hoped to arrange a Tribute concert in the future to allow his many fans and friends to meet up. Any floral tributes to Funeral Directors W. Uden & Sons, 265 Southampton Way, Camberwell, London SE9 7EN or donations to the Liver Intensive Therapy Unit, Kings College Hospital via the web site www.justgiving.com/andyphughes

this is all mixed, mastered and being manufactured at the moment... it's all brand new material from alex paterson and thomas fehlmann, it'll be released on july 6th and here's a slice of the press release: "... the good Doctor sets the controls beyond any Earthly confines and gets down to stratospheric sound painting and advanced sonic science, sprinkled with an avant garde disregard for conventional structures. These startling electronic odysseys are hatched with long-time collaborator Thomas Fehlmann, The Orb's Berlin connection who's been there from the first album and last made his towering presence felt on 2005's Okie Dokie album for the renowned Kompakt label, bastion of Berlin techno. Fresh from those superb guys at Malicious Damage comes a numbered limited edition collection of rare and unreleased transit kings tracks all the vinyl remixes, plus two new tracks, an orb remix and the 32-minute live set that was broadcast on eddy temple-morris's XFM remix show, all sumptuously packaged in the usual malicious stylee.

Well, mine arrived today and its a fantastic little package. If you haven't experienced a Malicious Damage release, then you really don't know what your missing. And for £11.50 delivered to my front door, its cracking value too... you even get a receipt with a personal thanks!

An update - of sorts

Evening all... I haven't forgotten about you all here, I've just been a touch tied up with the real job. On the mix front, I am still putting together the various base tracks for my next instalment of the "Do Robots Dream" series. If I can locate a few more decent tunes, then it may be that it'll be available before Christmas. If I'm being really honest with myself, the New Year is a more likely. Of course, if you look at the various tracks I've used for this series and you feel you have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to drop me a line here. I'm always on the lookout for new tracks and enjoy finding material I've not heard before.

Another interesting eBay purchase, this time in the form of a CDr. Here is the blurb from the seller:

"The Orb, Various Mix's. A superb original Orb rarity from 1993. Exclusive mix & track listing which includes a handwritten message inside.

Demo for "Johnny Menomic" movie soundtrack to a script by William Gibson - 1/6 made

A very rare item as only 6 were produced and this is the only one I've ever come across"

This is another strange one purely because I already own a CDr from "Chop Em Out" called "The Orb - Various Mixes '90-'93" [Promo 274] and this includes exactly the same track listing as the CDr above! This new CDr includes an inlay which features the Metropolis Mastering header and The Power House address. To muddy the waters still further, there is a third version of the same mix called "Radio Orb - Orb mixes, remixes & choice dub reggae cuts" so the jury is out on this one too... unless somebody can provide any details on the set and from where it originated...

The Orb - unreleased "Transient"

I found this item being sold on eBay so took the plunge. Here was the blurb along with additional info supplied by the seller obtained via email:

"The ORB Transient - an unreleased white label double LP. One white, one yellow record. I bought these at a record fair. The guy I bought them off said he was a DJ and the radio station he was working at were clearing their archives. He had a lot of stuff including lots of 80s and 90s promo's. I bought a number of other deleted items from him on cd (blue room, sabres of paradise, planet dog etc)had a brief chat and told him I was interested in 90's ambient and he recommended the LP's as unreleased promos. Since then I've had a bit of a clear out and never bought the decks I had in mind for vinyl so put them on ebay. Unfortunately I don't have any more info."

Well... I've had a listen to all four sides and am not entirely convinced of its legitimacy. Having said that, or perhaps its wishful thinking, there are bits of it that are very Orb-like. I did speak with Kris Weston last week and although he is still very much anti all things Orb, he did say that he cannot remember any recordings using this name. Before anybody asks, there is very little stamped on the vinyl, apart from "LP TOT 16A" and "*-JTS-". The only difference between the four sides is 16A, 16B, 16C and 16D. I am going to get the material professionally transferred from vinyl to CD so more news soon...

In the meantime, if anybody is able to throw any light on this, please do let us know!

Gadgets to die for!

Where would we be without our gadgets? For me in particular, my latest 6th generation 160gb iPod Classic and my Squeezebox 3 are irreplaceable.

Having uploaded a large variety of the mp3 material I have stored, I was shocked to see that I now have 735 albums worth of material to listen too. What is even more scary is that I still have 70gb of free space to fill!

Time for a rant though - why oh why has the latest incarnation of the iPod been ruined with an infuriating EEC driven volume limiter? Why the hell should a European parliament dictate to me at what volume I listen to my music through my ears? And before any do gooders wish to tell me about the damage I can do to my ears, I think I'm old enough and wise enough to decide what volumes I listen to my music. For instance, I use Sony MDR-V300 over the ear bins and despite these offering isolation from outside noise, whilst using a London underground train I could not hear very much at all! Frustrating eh? Fingers crossed that some bright soul manages to crack the Apple code which allows us to listen to music at volumes we choose...

As for the Squeezebox... if you know nothing about this device, take a look here. I run my Squeezebox on my wireless network and enjoy all the benefit of the internet radio stations listed previously in my blog through my main living room hi-fi at volumes which the music I listen too deserve to be played at...

Steve Roach - Life Sequence

I've been away for a few days and this gave me the chance to catch up on the ever growing list of albums on my "to listen to" list. This included some material by Steve Roach which I'd discovered (track "Destination Horizon") whilst listening to one of the Soma FM stations. As a result of this brief listen, I downloaded his 2003 album Life Sequence and finally found the time to give it a listen... and wow, what an aural experience and a half! The tracks are:

As a result of listening to this album, I now have several of his works loaded onto my iPod and now just need the time to do his music some justice...

Having been a listener for some time and put up with their low bit rate streams, I've finally pushed the boat out and become a premium member of the Digitally Imported FM multi-channel Internet radio service. This has been specializing in Electronic Dance Music genres since 1999 and I have Chillout, Ambient, Goa and Trance stations saved on my Squeezebox. All four are definitely well worth checking out...

I've been listening to their stream for most of the morning and have thoroughly enjoyed their playlist.
